The last wishes of Alexander the Great.

The Story: The last wishes of Alexander the Great.

On his death bed, Alexander summoned his army generals and told them his three ultimate wishes:

1. Only the best doctors who treated his sickness should carry his coffin to the graveyard...

2. The wealth he has accumulated; money, gold, silver should be scattered along his coffin procession to the cemetery...

3. His hands should be let loose, so they hang outside the coffin for all to see!!

One of his generals who were surprised by these unusual requests asked Alexander to explain.

Here what Alexander the Great had to say:

1. "I want best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that in the face of death; even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal…"

2. "I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth, will stay on earth...”

3. “I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is : Time.”

The Dog in the Well - Moral Stories

The Dog in the Well

In old times, there was a village having only one well for drinking water. One day a dog fell down in the well and died. The water became filthy and undrinkable.  The worried villagers went to the old wise man for advice. They were told to take 100 buckets of water from the well so that clean water come to the surface of the well. The villagers took 100 buckets but water status was same. They went to the wise man again. He suggested to take another 100 buckets. The villagers did the same but to no avail. They villagers tried third time to take another 100 buckets as per the advice from the wise man but water was still impure. The wise said, How come the whole well is polluted even removing this much considerable amount of water. Did you remove the dog body prior to taking 300 buckets of water? The villagers said, "no sir, you only advised us to take water out, not the dog body !!!"

Reflection

Several times in life we try to resolve our problems without considering the root cause of the problems. We believe that we are resolving the problem whereas in actual we are working on the side effects of problem not the problem itself. We don't see the big picture to understand the root of the issue.  We take advice from our well wishers but do not use our brain to think logically to analyze the advice and then decide, instead, we start acting blindly on the solutions suggested by others.

“I did not study much, I just read the newspaper” Munish Sharma

UPSC second rank holder Munish Sharma

“I did not study much, I just read the newspaper” - The Hindu

UPSC second rank holder Munish Sharma

Munish Sharma began “subconsciously” preparing to become an IAS officer ever since he was in Class VI. He became financially independent by the time he reached Class IX and several years -- a Biochemistry degree and an MBA -- later, on a windy Thursday afternoon he aced the Civil Services examinations, coming second.

“I did not study too much, just read The Hindu newspaper word to word. I loved it. I also loved taking the Civil Services examination. I was never bogged down by the sheer work that everyone talks about. I read the newspaper, I wrote the exam,” he said, adding that he had not found time to celebrate yet as he was busy accepting all the congratulatory messages streaming in all day.

“I worked in the corporate world for five years and then decided it was time to become the IAS officer I always wanted to be. I did not shut myself in to study for hours. I continued reading the papers,” he said, adding that his mother, who also loves newspapers and reading and who brought him up single-handedly, was his main inspiration. “She is a teacher, I also took classes by the time I was in Class XI and supported myself financially.”

His advice to all those with IAS dreams in their hearts: “Enjoy what you do. Shutting yourself away from everything enjoyable is not the way to go about it. Focus is important, but enjoying the process is more important.”

The Delhi boy had very proud teachers from his alma mater Sri Venkateshwara College: “We are happy, I do not know him personally but I am proud,” said Arti Saxena, a Botany teacher.

“I know him very well and I am not surprised, he was always a clever one,” said Nanditha Narayan, a teacher who taught him many years ago.
